Time and Presence
Key point: Among the factors that promote resilience in children, connectedness is central. The knowledge that one is understood, valued, and “on the radar” of a caring, adult is essential for healthy child development. Giving our time to our children, therefore, is a critical resilient building parenting practice: “Being with” needs to be valued as much as “doing with”.
One of the greatest barriers to a child’s sense of “togetherness” is their ability to know where Mom or Dad really is in any moment. Thus, one critical goal for parents is to enhance our ability to be present in the moment.
Most parents find it challenging to create space for simple experiences of togetherness. Real-world distractions, internal chatter, “to do” lists – undercut our ability to be with our children without an internal (and perhaps external) sense of fidgeting.
The more we work on our ability to be with our children, the greater the connection you and your children will experience.
2. How do you think about the time you share with your children? What do you value about time? What are your goals in relationship to your time together?
3. What are the real world hindrances to reaching your goals around time together?
4. How can you use knowledge of your strengths and your children’s strengths to help navigate these roadblocks?

Mama's Little Furbaby!

Meeting her big sister J...immediate L-O-V-E!
We were pretty sure Coco would never learn to walk, we all just wanted to snuggle her all the time.
She is the queen of invading personal space. Remember THIS POST?
She doesn't want to be left out of anything. Remember when Flat Reese came to visit?
This is the picture we submitted to our blog illustrator...and as you can see from our header, she is a main star of this blog!!
Speaking of quirky, her strange love affair with our special needs kitty Pete continues to make us laugh. Pete is less than amused, obviously.
So go and vote for Coco....and pretty please leave a comment on Life with the Dietrich's after your vote!It May Not Pay to Remodel Your Home
Are you looking for ways to spruce up your home, and wondering how to get the most bang for your buck at resale time? Unfortunately, in current marketplace, anyone planning a home remodeling project will be paying a lot more for the job than they'll get back when they sell. This information comes from Remodeling Magazine's 2010 Remodeling Cost versus Value Survey, which was compiled in conjunction with the National Association of Realtors (NAR).
According to the report, an average of only 60% of remodeling costs expended in 2010 would be recouped by homeowners. Exterior improvements – like new siding or roof replacement – generally performed better than interior fixes, likely because they help to maintain a home's curb appeal. "In today's buyers market, given the large inventory, where people have so much selection, it's important to have the exterior catch the eye so [potential buyers will be] willing to step inside," according to Lawrence Yun, chief economist for NAR.
Because of the recession, 2010 has shown a drastic decline in the amount of home improvement costs which can be recouped. Specifically – and despite declines in construction costs not seen since 2004 – homeowners got back 16% less value for their improvements than in 2009. That's the steepest drop in the survey's nine-year history.
While it may seem paradoxical, the more money that was spent for a remodeling job this year, the lower the percentage of return. That's strikingly obvious when comparing kitchen remodeling costs. A mid-range kitchen remodel costs nearly $60,000, but returns just 70% of that expense at resale. Similarly, a high-end renovation adds just 60% of its $113,000 cost.
The lowest return of any job was for a mid-range home office renovation, which cost an average of $28,888 and added just $13,235, a paltry 45.8% (less than half!) of the hard-earned dollars spent. However, low-cost exterior improvements actually did perform well. An exterior steel door replacement returned 102% of its $1,218 cost; new garage doors recoup 84% of their cost.
Two jobs were tied for the best return on investment for any mid-range remodeling project costing more than $10,000. The first of these was the addition of a wood deck. The second was doing a minor kitchen remodel (replacing cabinet doors and counters, buying new appliances, sinks, and faucets, and repainting walls and trim). Both of these projects recouped 72.8% of their costs.
If you're hoping to recapture the full cost of any home improvement undertaking when reselling, the likelihood is frankly bleak. Be realistic, and only do such a project if you're planning to stay in your home and want to increase your own comfort level. A 60% return on investment – especially in hard economic times – can’t really be seriously considered, especially in light of other, potentially more profitable, investment options.

W-A-R-N-I-N-G Possible TMI on the horizon
Big Daddy can sleep as soon as his head hits the pillow...and he has no problems pooping.
When my sister was potty training her little girl "Pieces" she would tell her that if she pooped on the potty she would get to call one of the Disney princesses.
Anyway, Big Daddy thought this was awesome!
yep...he is H-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S...not!

Swappy Swap Stuff
Seriously. I know not everyone "gets" me or my rules.Hey there!
So I joined a swap about the same time as your Pinktastic Swap and I sent my goodies to my partner and she sent me an email ... "Yay, thanks! I love the stuff! And I totally forgot about the swap, I haven't got you anything! I'll try to put a package together for you" blah blah blah. Needless to say, nothing came. Which is fine ... I joined these swaps to have fun, meet bloggers, make friends, hopefully send my swap buddy fun goodies that she'll love. If I want my own goodies I can buy them, but the swap is just a fun part of blogging for me. Anyway ... point of my emai to you ... I LOVE how you run & organize & keep everyone accountable in your swaps.
You're the Swap Goddess!
And I love my new partner....we're having fun getting to know each other.
That is all.
Hugs
