Blogger is Poopy!

OK so overnight all of the votes on my poll disappeared.

POOF! Gone!

So pretty please will you vote again?

And umm...

Could you please go and vote for Coco again?

She went from 43 votes and the lead to 21 and now is in second place.

Blogger is messing with the wrong people today yo!

It's one thing to mess with MY poll.

But mess with a poll where my little Coco loses votes and Mama ain't happy.

Thanks for going to vote a THIRD time, this is crazy.

Let me know you voted, I guess I am gonna have to give a prize to one lucky person.

There have been so many "technical difficulties" surrounding this particular Cutest Pet Contest.

I feel bad about sending y'all back there over and over.

So everyone deserves a prize...so I am gonna give you a chance to win one.

Do YOU Wanna Play?!

So I am thinking of a new weekly linky party.

I am also thinking I want someone to co-host it with.

Anyone interested?

Be sure to vote in my newest poll. (blogger erased 67 votes, please vote again)

See it? Over there on my sidebar?

I am thinking it would be fun to do either or both.

I have been pulling posts from my archives that I wanted to share with new readers or I just felt like they needed to be seen again.

I thought we could give that a cute name, something to do with "Recycle" cuz it would make us sound all "green" and junk too.

Then I thought I really enjoy those Question and Answer posts.

But the people I would ordinarily join up with aren't always consistent with when they post the questions.

And sometimes they just skip it all together for weeks at a time.

I am one of those "scheduled post" bloggers.

You know, like a night I can't sleep I will just knock out a bunch of posts and schedule them.

I do that ALL the time with my Happy List and Friday Confessional.

Mostly because I add to them throughout the week.

But you get what I mean.

Anyobsessivecompulsivedisorder...

I LOVE having a little bloggy crutch aka linky party to help me post more often.

I also think it is a GREAT way to grow your following and make new blog friends.

AND

I seriously despise those silly "Blog Hop" things.

You know the ones...we have ALL received that stupid cut and paste comment...

"Hi. I love your blog! I am your newest follower, follow me back!"

GAG!

You spent the time creating a post and among the thoughtful comments from the people who actually READ what you composed is THAT garbage!?

Yuck!

I like a linky party with a prompt, so I wanna flood the blogsphere with them.

So...who wants to play?

OH and could you please vote for Coco here...her self esteem is counting on it!

Time and Presence

On Wednesday I spent an hour participating in a Fishful Thinking webinar.

For those of you who are not familiar, Fishful Thinking is a website created by Pepperidge Farm, the makers of Goldfish.

You know Goldfish, the snack that smiles back? Of course you do!

Well, they created a website for Parenting Possibilities and I am on the Fishful Thinking faculty.

OK now that we got THAT all out of the way...

The topic of the webinar was Time and Presence and the main speaker was Dr. Karen Reivich, an expert in the field of positive psychology.

Key point: Among the factors that promote resilience in children, connectedness is central. The knowledge that one is understood, valued, and “on the radar” of a caring, adult is essential for healthy child development. Giving our time to our children, therefore, is a critical resilient building parenting practice: “Being with” needs to be valued as much as “doing with”.

One of the greatest barriers to a child’s sense of “togetherness” is their ability to know where Mom or Dad really is in any moment. Thus, one critical goal for parents is to enhance our ability to be present in the moment.

Most parents find it challenging to create space for simple experiences of togetherness. Real-world distractions, internal chatter, “to do” lists – undercut our ability to be with our children without an internal (and perhaps external) sense of fidgeting.

The more we work on our ability to be with our children, the greater the connection you and your children will experience.

Discussion Questions: (my answers are italicized)

1. What words come to mind when you think about time and your family?

laughter, togetherness, conversation, joy

2. How do you think about the time you share with your children? What do you value about time? What are your goals in relationship to your time together?

The thing I most value about the time we share with J is the level of open communication we share. That she trusts us enough to say whatever is on her mind and that she actually values our opinions and thoughts enough to ask for them. I also think that J appreciates that we ask for her thoughts and opinions. I don't think she gets that enough outside of our little family. I think this is all within our goals of our time together. We want to make sure the lines of communication are always open. This is something we have been working towards when we started our family and something we want all of our kids (present and future) to feel a sense of belonging and that they matter and that we ARE present and listening.

3. What are the real world hindrances to reaching your goals around time together?

The main hindrance is not having J home full time anymore. The fact that she is a teenager and would rather spend her time with her friends and that we have less and less of a daily presence in her life. Whereas before it was family dinner every night followed by games.

4. How can you use knowledge of your strengths and your children’s strengths to help navigate these roadblocks?

I think for US encouraging J to come up with ways we can connect as a family and giving her the power to decide what the activity is going to be holds her more accountable to "showing up". I also feel it empowers her to make good and healthy choices in her life and time with family is a good and healthy choice.

I think for me, the area in my life that i do the most "sefl checking" is my parenting.

I am always worried and wondering if I doing enough and if my kid knows I love her, if I am setting her up for successes in her life etc.

I personally think making yourself fully present in your child's life takes a little practice.

When they walk into the room to ask me a question, do I give them eye contact?

What does the expression on my face tell them?

Does she walk away feeling valued and HEARD?

All little things that I am going to pay closer attention to. I was listening to a podcast not that long ago on "Little Ways We Show Love" or something to that affect.

The thing I took away was something soooo simple.

It was all about the face your children see.

You know, we all get stressed, angry and frustrated with life...stuff our kids have nothing to do with.

I want to encourage everyone to do one small thing with their kids, just to be a little more present.

When they walk into the room, or are walking towards the car after school or whatever...

Think about your face.

Make sure the expression they see is one of LOVE.

Simple right?

Mama's Little Furbaby!

Our little Chiweenie Coco has been nominated for Cutest Pet!

(Voting was closed for a little while and has now moved to the sidebar AND it started all over again....soooo if you already voted pretty please go vote again! PLEASE...)

Shhhh...don't tell her she is a pet, she doesn't even know she is a dog.

Finding out could have devastating consequences.

Do you want to help Coco win?

Look at her...here she is at just 6 weeks old

Meeting her big sister J...immediate L-O-V-E!

We were pretty sure Coco would never learn to walk, we all just wanted to snuggle her all the time.
She is the queen of invading personal space. Remember THIS POST?

She doesn't want to be left out of anything. Remember when Flat Reese came to visit?

This is the picture we submitted to our blog illustrator...and as you can see from our header, she is a main star of this blog!!
We love her quirky personality...and if she is cold, she will find a way to get warm.
Speaking of quirky, her strange love affair with our special needs kitty Pete continues to make us laugh. Pete is less than amused, obviously.

So go and vote for Coco....and pretty please leave a comment on Life with the Dietrich's after your vote!

FYI for some reason, the way the poll is set up, you need to vote for 2 dogs. It's OK Coco is fine sharing the spotlight (:

Big shout out to MiMi for letting me know the post was up so i could beg for votes, good thing she saw it and let me know on Facebook, thanks MiMs!

Remember when I was nominated for Top Blog 2010 (aka longest-contest-in-history-so-The Blog-Guidebook-could-build-their-following)?

Yeah, let's hope this contest wraps up faster than that.

The blogger hosting this Cutest Pet contest seems like a real peach, so please leave a comment on her blog while you are there.

OH and I am not offering a million prizes this time...will you still vote for Coco?

It May Not Pay to Remodel Your Home

Are you looking for ways to spruce up your home, and wondering how to get the most bang for your buck at resale time? Unfortunately, in current marketplace, anyone planning a home remodeling project will be paying a lot more for the job than they'll get back when they sell. This information comes from Remodeling Magazine's 2010 Remodeling Cost versus Value Survey, which was compiled in conjunction with the National Association of Realtors (NAR).

According to the report, an average of only 60% of remodeling costs expended in 2010 would be recouped by homeowners. Exterior improvements – like new siding or roof replacement – generally performed better than interior fixes, likely because they help to maintain a home's curb appeal. "In today's buyers market, given the large inventory, where people have so much selection, it's important to have the exterior catch the eye so [potential buyers will be] willing to step inside," according to Lawrence Yun, chief economist for NAR.

Because of the recession, 2010 has shown a drastic decline in the amount of home improvement costs which can be recouped. Specifically – and despite declines in construction costs not seen since 2004 – homeowners got back 16% less value for their improvements than in 2009. That's the steepest drop in the survey's nine-year history.

While it may seem paradoxical, the more money that was spent for a remodeling job this year, the lower the percentage of return. That's strikingly obvious when comparing kitchen remodeling costs. A mid-range kitchen remodel costs nearly $60,000, but returns just 70% of that expense at resale. Similarly, a high-end renovation adds just 60% of its $113,000 cost.

The lowest return of any job was for a mid-range home office renovation, which cost an average of $28,888 and added just $13,235, a paltry 45.8% (less than half!) of the hard-earned dollars spent. However, low-cost exterior improvements actually did perform well. An exterior steel door replacement returned 102% of its $1,218 cost; new garage doors recoup 84% of their cost.

Two jobs were tied for the best return on investment for any mid-range remodeling project costing more than $10,000. The first of these was the addition of a wood deck. The second was doing a minor kitchen remodel (replacing cabinet doors and counters, buying new appliances, sinks, and faucets, and repainting walls and trim). Both of these projects recouped 72.8% of their costs.

If you're hoping to recapture the full cost of any home improvement undertaking when reselling, the likelihood is frankly bleak. Be realistic, and only do such a project if you're planning to stay in your home and want to increase your own comfort level. A 60% return on investment – especially in hard economic times – can’t really be seriously considered, especially in light of other, potentially more profitable, investment options.

This information really surprised me. We were hoping a kitchen remodel would add to the value of the house we live in right now. It would make me HAPPY, but it seems it will not make my in laws (who own the house) any more money when they sell.

I have no idea what made the difference but I am HAPPY that YOU are HAPPY!

I WON an Athropologie giveaway hosted by the gorgeous Ricki Jill from Art@Home Look at everything she sent. I had to steal the picture from her blog because my camera was not cooperating. At. All.

Darling stuff right? I love it...thank you soooo much Ricki Jill!

I am HAPPY it finally stopped raining for a few days. It has NOT been pretty here.

I am HAPPY that in the last 2 weeks I have lost 17 lbs.

I started joined the Be Slim For Life Club (medifast) because my blood sugar was all funky for no good reason.

I wanted to just jump start and reset.

I lost 11 lbs the first week and 6 lbs so far this week (official weigh in is Monday).

I am a girl who loves my curves, I only did this because my blood sugar was whackadoo.

You know I am Type 2 Diabetic right?

Yeah I found that out after I almost died and spent a week in ICU.

I have been doing really well managing my glucose without insulin, but for a few weeks there I was having to give myself a shot at least once a day...and me no likey sticking a needle into my belly.

So I wanted a quick solution.

Medifast has been working...and let me tell you this is the FIRST diet I have ever been on that I do not feel deprived. HAPPY!

Is it weird to start a post with cupcakes and end it with a diet?

Yeah, my life is random.

So what is on YOUR Happy List this week? Make your Happy List, add the cute button to your post and link up THAT post.
Photobucket
In an effort to get more people participating in the Happy List link party I am going to do a drawing each month from the link lists for a special prize, just a little something...maybe something featured on MY Happy List! Friday Confessional

I Confess...

I cheat.

I do it to feel better about myself.

You should try it, it totally works.

Like when I make a TO DO list,

I ALWAYS start with "make TO DO list"

Then I list 2 things I have already accomplished.

This way I can cross 3 things off immediately.

Admit it, I am brilliant.

Feel free to steal my idea.

You can thank me later.

I Confess...

I choose things based on their name or title.

Perfect example.

We needed to hire a gardener.

ok we didn't NEED to, but neither of us likes yard work.

So we hired our gardener cuz his name is Mr. Dong.

THAT is an easy check to write...makes me giggle every time I see his bill.

I Confess...

Speaking of people we pay to do stuff we COULD do but don't.

My pool boy is HOT!

I look forward to Thursdays.

I thank Big Daddy all the time for hiring me some eye candy.

I Confess...

I love that Big Daddy doesn't care what gets me "pre heated"

As long as I am hot for him!

I love a confident and secure man.

I Confess...

My 40th birthday is exactly one week away.

I have not heard of any special plans being made.

This makes me a little sad.

A girl doesn't turn 40 everyday ya know.

This is kind of a big deal.

I Confess...

I worry how shallow and petty that makes me sound.

But I love a good party.

Especially one held in MY honor.

Who doesn't?

I Confess...

When I first started writing ads for SocialSpark I wasn't 100% sure about it.

I mean, I liked the idea of using my blog to make money.

But I was worried I would lose readers.

I didn't, and I really appreciate that.

I Confess...

I was leery to try something new.

I get lots and lots of offers for advertising and I turn it all down.

SocialSpark is not only 100% legit...

It is an easy (and fun) way to make a little extra money.

IF you sign up let me know HERE...you could win something awesome.

Soooooooo what are you confessing this week? Glamazon and I want to hear all about it so link up your posts and remember Confession is good for the soul.

Photobucket

Friday Confessional is growing, and we have the most amazing bloggers playing along! Love you all! Unfortunately there are a few who are using our weekly purging to get you to their site-and have you enter a giveaway or read a review-NOT what Friday Confessional is about! So just be warned, if your link doesn't lead back to your confessional, you may be deleted! NEWBIES-don't you be afeared! Because we love you! If we go to your link at it shows a post about how your husband forgot to take out the trash, but a few posts down it says Friday Confessional, you are doing just fine! Ain't nobody gonna delete you, we will HELP you FIX it.

W-A-R-N-I-N-G Possible TMI on the horizon

I decided to continue pulling some of my favorites from the archives.

Here is one from 2008. You can thank me later.

We're friends right?

I mean you read my blog, I read your blog.

We share stories. We Laugh. We cry. We learn from each other.

It's all fabulous right?

So I am going to get a little personal here.

Just because I think it's REALLY funny.

If we aren't as close as I think we are, feel free to skip this post.

It's OK click on by baby, I won't be offended.

OK so now that those people left...I can continue.

There are 2 things about me that are frustrating and cause me a few problems in my life.

1. I am not a good sleeper. I haven't been since i turned 30. I don't know why, but I rarely get more than 3 hours of good deep sleep at a time, unless i medicate and medicating gives me headaches that turn into migraines.

Still with me?

Ready for #2?

Yeah so am I (i will give you a minute to see if you can tell where i am going with #2).

Yep, that's right...I am not "regular" in the poop department.

It kills me, I hate it.

Soooo....2. is I have troubles not pooping enough.

Anyone still there?

It's true, we are friends, so I am sharing.

Big Daddy can sleep as soon as his head hits the pillow...and he has no problems pooping.

When my sister was potty training her little girl "Pieces" she would tell her that if she pooped on the potty she would get to call one of the Disney princesses.

Or Dora the Explorer or whoever else she fancied talking to that day.

After Peices had a successful potty on the toilet she would choose a princess and Meg would call them.

Pieces would loooooove talking to one of the "princesses" (usually me, or my mom or one of Meg's friends).

AND months later, when they went to Disneyland she walked right up to Cinderella

and said, "HI, it's me Pieces, remember when I called you when I went potty?"

Cinderella, bless her heart, did not skip a beat and said, "oh yes of course how are you Pieces? I am so proud of you for using the potty."

Awesome right?!

Only at Disneyland, does THAT kind of magic happen.

Anyway, Big Daddy thought this was awesome!

And since then EVERY TIME I spend a little time in the bathroom

And have success.

He says, "OH yay good for you, should we call Cinderella or Snow White?"

yep...he is H-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S...not!

Adventures with Flat Mamarazzi

Photobucket

Flat Mamarazzi made 16 wonderful friends, mostly from Kansas, and had the time of her life, serving Haitians and Dominicans in this poverty-stricken area. Without opportunities for work and with no legal status in the DR, the Haitians in Caraballo have very little opportunity to provide for their families. They are grateful to God that He has sent different organizations to provide the bare necessities for them and even to provide work for some of them.

Check out this video:

If anyone would like to help this community, you can do so through Kids Alive (kidsalive.org) or La Tienda, the Fair Trade store in Caraballo (latienda.ca/La_Tienda.html).

Flat Mamarazzi has been all over the place!

She had an amazing GNO with her FBFF MiMi and Shawn...who knows how to party y'all!

She had a girl's weekend with Steph

She went on a looong road trip to the Keys with Michelle.

I know she has been a few other places too...I am a slacker.

Swappy Swap Stuff

I got an email today that made me smile from ear to ear.

It also reminded me WHY I host swaps.
Hey there!

So I joined a swap about the same time as your Pinktastic Swap and I sent my goodies to my partner and she sent me an email ... "Yay, thanks! I love the stuff! And I totally forgot about the swap, I haven't got you anything! I'll try to put a package together for you" blah blah blah. Needless to say, nothing came. Which is fine ... I joined these swaps to have fun, meet bloggers, make friends, hopefully send my swap buddy fun goodies that she'll love. If I want my own goodies I can buy them, but the swap is just a fun part of blogging for me. Anyway ... point of my emai to you ... I LOVE how you run & organize & keep everyone accountable in your swaps.

You're the Swap Goddess!

And I love my new partner....we're having fun getting to know each other.

That is all.

Hugs
Seriously. I know not everyone "gets" me or my rules.

And TRUST me I get my fair share of angry mail from people who do not qualify for my swaps.

BUT

I wouldn't change my rules for anything.

Because everyone gets a package when they participate in MY swaps.

It has taken me YEARS of hosting swaps to get it down to a science.

I am so thankful for people who sign up as Swap Angels, ready to jump in and put an item in the mail for someone who didn't received a packages or received craptastic packages.

Everyone has their partners for the Favorite Things Swap.

Packages will be going out PRIORITY mail on Fri. April 1 (my 40th birthday) or Sat. April 2.

I hope you are all enjoying getting to know your partners.

I hope you're visiting each others blogs and leaving comment L-O-V-E.

AND

I hope you are having fun gathering YOUR Favorite Things for your packages!

I know I am (holla JennyKate!!).

My Happy List

I am sooooo HAPPY about the super awesome turnout for the Happy List Link party last weekend.

Thanks to everyone for linking up your Happy Lists. So cool.

On my Happy List this week...

SPRING!!!

The blossoms on the trees are gorgeous and make me HAPPY and think of new beginnings.

This time of year really makes me want to clean my house.

I guess that's why they call it Spring cleaning. Duh!

So Big Daddy and I moved furniture around in the family room.

I am soooo HAPPY to have it back in it's original spot.

I don't know what I was thinking when we moved it...this is perfect!

J has been using Suave 2 in 1 shampoo for forever. She loves it and her hair is always gorgeous.

I was shopping at Target, HAPPY, and saw NEW Suave Professionals for colored hair.

It was inexpensive, I decided to try it and I LOVE it.

For real. Try it, I bet you love it too.

I am so HAPPY to have Taking Back Monday Giveaways booked through May.

Yeah baby...my scheduled post folder is FILLED with Etsy goodness.

If you have an Etsy shop you would like to be featured send me a note.

OK I have been using L'OREAL bare minerals for a looooong time.

And I love it. I have even talked about it on my Happy List.

My mom bought some Bobbi Brown moisture rich foundation in the wrong shade.

She gave it to me and told me I could either keep it or take it back for Macy's store credit.

Well it sat in the bag on my bathroom vanity for weeks.

One day my skin was feeling a little dry so I decided to give it a try.

I am so HAPPY with how it makes my skin feel.

I am less than happy to learn it is $45 a bottle.

But I will enjoy the HAPPY skin for as long as it lasts.

So, what is on YOUR Happy List this week? Grab a button add it to your Happy List and link up!
