Blogging 101 Tip 4

Today's Blogging 101 Tip comes to us from Brandy @ You Don't Know... . Brandy will be telling you how word verification is the devil and how to turn it off and not get spammed.

Why you should JUST SAY NO to word veri.

  • People hate it. No, really, HATE. There isn't a single Word Veri Sparkle Hearts Fan Club.

  • People will LOVE your face forevah if you turn it off. You will likely get double the comments about how glad they are that you turned it off.

  • Isn't it better to delete a random spam comment rather than CONSTANTLY annoy ALL of your followers?

  • How to Turn OFF Word Verification: Go to your Dashboard - Settings - Comments - Show Word Verification for Comments? NO NO NO NO.

Those other arrows up there are some super helpful options.

So you are worried about that random spam comment?! Can't sleep at night?

Here is what I do to deter the spammers

  • Registered Users can comment (NO ANONYMOUS) Anonymous is usually mean anyway

  • Comment Moderation - this means every comment comes to your email addy and you HAVE to accept or reject before it posts. I do this on comments older than 14 days.

  • To receive your comments without moderating - just put your email addy in the comment notification box
Try it! Please for the love of bloggers EVERYWHERE.

I heard that every time you fill out a word verification a baby unicorn loses it's sparkle.

LOVE this Brandy. Thanks so much for your fabulous tips and tutorial!!

And what about those blogs who have BOTH Word Verification AND they Moderate Comments.

It's like they don't want comments at all, right? Choose one or the other, never both!!

The point is, don't make your readers jump through hoops to leave you comment love, make it easy...more comments, I PROMISE!!

I Love you guys!! Love today's tips! Luckily Myya was a nice enough friend to tell me how annoying it was to do word veri so I turned it off before, but I had EVERYONE able to comment and if I had no anonymous checked, then I wouldn't have gotten and weird and way inappropriate comment last week!! How true that usually anonymous doesn't have anything good to say anyways! LOVE girls! thanks!

    Word verification is from Satan.

Word verification is the devil, but some is worse than other. I don't really mind the type a crazy "word", but the ones that want a mix of numbers and letters drive me nuts. Oh and I hate the stealth verifiers--the ones that look all normal and then you hit submit and bam--verify sucker!

Yes, yes, yes! Word verification is from the devil! Great tip!

    Amen. Word verification stinks.

I also heard that every time you fill out a word verification a baby unicorn loses its sparkle. Clearly it's true.

Also, I'm one of those "slow" people that has a hard time with word verification, Blogger's isn't TERRIBLE, but if I look at it and can't get it, I move on...so I really hope that people take heed on this and update their settings because there's a lot of comments they're missing out on!

I turned the captcha on because I was getting spam. But I will turn it off just for you and Brandy. HOWEVER, I expect twice as many comments in the coming weeks. ;-)

I agree with all of the above ... I had word verification once, but it took only one person mentioning something - for me to take it down!

    Happy Tuesday!

Great tip!! I turned off my word verification.. just for ya'll!! :)

Nothing is worse though than putting a comment in.... and hitting POST 6X bc it takes that long for the system to realize you are leaving a comment, and then you have to do the word verification... most of the time I'm ready to give up and not even care if my comment is posted.

For the love of baby unicorns everywhere, please do what she says and say no to word verification!!

OKAY! I'm going to give this a chance. I've obeyed the commands and removed the veri word. (I know you'll like this since you hate it) but let's see how it turns out.

I'm always up for new things!

Great post, even better when the poster is a funny gal! Nothing worse then writing a lengthy comment & then hitting submit thinking it is there & then going to x out just to realize that word verification was coming up. Lost comments are awful, who can remember what they want to say twice LOL.

You are so right!!! I hope everyone reads your post.

I use no word veri and haven't since blogger came up with the spam blocker.

I detest going to a blog that uses word verification and then you have to go to the bottom of the blog to put it in and then go back to get if it's taken!!!

I am sure I have made some comments that never saw the light of day.
