On Finding Your Flow

Our awesome daughter Jordan loves to babysit. She has always had an affinity for infants and is really quite wonderful and nurturing caring for them.

Since J is kind of young for her age, she does all of her babysitting here in our home where she has "back up" if there is an emergency. She has never needed our help and we hardly see her at all during these babysitting sessions, but she is not quite ready to take the show on the road, so to speak.

Lately, particularly this past Summer J has really seemed to find her *flow with children of all ages. She had several opportunities to be the "babysitter" when we had my nephews.

On one of the many times that Big Daddy took the boys to the skate park
the little boys had no interest in skating. So Jordan tended them while the big boys skateboarded with Big Daddy.

J loved this little bit of responsibility, even though Big Daddy was within view and earshot.

She completely lost herself in caring for Brock and Steven, who just so happened to wear matching shirts this day...(Brock is my brother Mark's youngest and Steven is my sister Amy's youngest)

They spent hours swinging, laughing and enjoying the solo attention of Jordan. J loved being the one to provide them with all the attention too!

J was excited to get home and share the pictures of her babysitting adventure.

Yep, I think they KNOW how adorable they are...what do you think?!

J was sooooo excited to "treat" all of the boys to shaved ice on this hot sunny day. She said, "It felt like I was a grown up, taking care of these little boys." and "I really think the boys appreciated how cool I am to buy them a treat!"

I know WE appreciate how cool you are J. You are growing into a darling and responsible young woman. Daddy and I really love you and we are so pleased with the beautiful person you are both inside and out!

I am interested in knowing, where do your kids seem to find their flow? AND Where do YOU find your flow?!

*Dr. Reivich suggests in the September Fishful Thinking Newsletter that flow is the mental state in which you are fully immersed in an activity. Your focus is laser like. You feel lost in the activity – fully absorbed in what you are doing. Time stands still. You are “in the zone”. When in flow, people describe deep concentration, a sense of being in control, and that the activity itself is intrinsically rewarding. Flow is deeply satisfying and brings a feeling of joy.

Well I started babysitting when I was 14 years old and then I foloowed on to be a trained Playleader for a holiday playscheme in our town. It is funny how you just 'know' where your flow is sometimes as I am now running my own tots group and possibly becoming a child minder. Even though my heart lies with academia and especially with writing I can still use my skills with caring for children to earn a living etc.

Your daughter is beautiful and clearly a caring girl. As for the boys - OMG they are adoreable. Not sure what youngling will be as hes only 18 months. I hope he is intelligent though then the possibilities will be endless! lol

Take care very interesting post thanks for sharing KC xx

My oldest, she's 16 now, has always had "the touch" when it comes to kids, we call her the baby whisperer. She had {she doesn't do much babysitting anymore} a babysitting bag. It was full of special toys, ingredients to make homemade play-dough and Hershey Kisses. The kids would see that bag and not even think about their parents leaving. I had every Mom call me to tell me what a great idea that was and how their kids, even if they couldn't remember her name, would ask for the babysitter with the bag!

Way to J it won't be long before you'll be the most sought after sitter in town!

Oh that's just too adorable. GO J!! Nice job finding your flow :) (And yup - those boys look like they're in heaven :) )

I agree with Shawn. It's not very often nowadays that you can find a babysitter who actually ENJOYS playing with the kids more than spending time on their phones. She will for sure be the most sought after babysitter in town, with TLC like that!

What an awesome day at the park. That is awesome that J loves being with kids... wonder if this will be her career calling later in life. Your nephews look as if they could be brothers not cousins. Man, are they cute!!!

How cool! Kids have always been my "thing"...I remember being SIX and my parents hiring a babysitter, then having her sit on the phone all night talking to her boyfriend, so I took care of the three younger ones. Ever since... LOL! I'm a full time nanny & babysit still on the side, and really love it. :) How awesome for Jordan (and btw, if she chooses to go in to Childcare full time, it's great to have a degree, even if it's an Associate's, in Child Development/something similar....speaking from experience!)

My kiddos are long out of the house but I used to love to babysit and made enough money back in the day to make a down payment on my first used car. Good for her. My girls did music for the youngest and language for the oldest and they both are still there.

Im not sure of my kids flow yet...My oldest is really great with animals but also with younger children. She is so great with her little sister. Not that they dont have their little spats (they are almost 6 yrs apart) but overall Rhiannon is really good to Layla!
