Work It Girl!

Jordan has been going to the gym with Big Daddy. She loves it! Now that she is old enough to go she wants to go everyday. They do the circuit, run on the treadmills, and really love the Expresso Bikes! The bikes are super cool and are set up so you can race each other on a video screen. You can choose your route and can even go mountain biking. J is determined to "kick daddy's butt" in one of their races but has not been able to. According to Big Daddy she is getting better everyday though. J also loves the rock climbing wall and is expressing an interest in the water aerobics...since Big Daddy doesn't swim in public pools (germa-phobe) it looks like I will be the one joining J for water aerobics on Mondays and Wednesdays (ahem...there will be no pictures. You. Are. Welcome.)

I love to hear all about their gym adventures and see J tell Big Daddy, "This is the day. I am soooo gonna kick your butt on the bike!" E-V-E-R-Y day as they head out to the gym. I also love when J comes home and flexes her muscles and asks me to "check out these guns!" (wonder where she got that from?!)

Yep...she is awesome and so is her daddy.

Cooking with Jordan! #20 Lime Dill Crusted Salmon

Time for another episode of Cooking with Jordan. You can view earlier episodes by clicking on these links Preview, One Dish Mexican, Grilled Chicken, Cooking(?) with Daddy, Tortellini Soup , Teriyaki Chicken, Buffalo Chicken Bites, Parmesan Chicken Pasta With Broccoli, Garbage Casserole, Cheeseburger Pie, Golden Crusted Chicken Asparagus Lasagna, Baked Rigatoni, Tuna Noodle Casserole, BBQ Beef Crumble, Feel Better Chicken Noodle Soup, Faux Sushi,Chicken Pot Pie on the Fly, Chicken and Dumplings, Egg Nog Pie, BBQ Beef Cups and Beef Pot Pie w/ Corn Bread Crust. The whole point of the cooking lessons for J is to show her some basic easy meals, teach her how to plan a menu, learn how to follow a recipe and help her become more comfortable in the kitchen...this is not anything totally gourmet or culinary school worthy. We hope you enjoy Cooking With Jordan and try these recipes with your kids. They are totally J approved!

Since Spring has sprung we decided to do a little outdoor grilling. J has wanted to learn how to BBQ for a while so I thought this was the perfect first "grill recipe" to teach her.

Lime Dill Crusted Salmon
lay salmon fillets on aluminum foil
make sure to leave enough on the ends to create a "tent"
saturate salmon with lime juice
sprinkle with garlic salt (we can't cook without it)
cover salmon with dill weed
sprinkle with lemon pepper
loosely gather foil into tent shape and seal closed
grill on med low for 6-10 minutes
you will know it is done when it flakes apart with a fork
J likes hers with mashed potatoes and of course broccoli
YUM! You are going to love this EASY and delicious way to eat salmon!

Another Goal Executed!

Jordan is a goal setter. She loves to challenge herself to try new things. Jordan has not always been this way. When she was younger she was terrified of "the unknown". Things like elevators and escalators scared her to death. Getting her to try new things was a BIG challenge for us. She was 10 years old when she did her first somersault because she "was afraid to go upside down". Let's just say this kid has come a long way in the last few years, and she will be the first to tell you just how far she has come. She has set BIG and small goals for herself and is checking things off her list daily.

At Christmas Jordan received a 500 piece puzzle from her BFF Emma. She let it sit for a while unopened as she prepared herself to take on the challenge. The day finally came and she set a goal to accomplish the puzzle. Over the course of 6 weeks she worked on it, a little each day, until it was finally complete. I made a post HERE about the following conversation:

Whenever she is in her game room watching her TV she is also working on a puzzle. Today I asked her about the puzzle noticing that she had really made some progress on it this weekend. She said, "This is a hard one. I keep telling myself not to give up!" First I told her how impressed I was with her "stick-to-it-ness" and then asked her if she wanted a little help. She smiled and said, "No thanks, I really like the feeling I get when I finish something that was hard to do."

Serious proud mama moment. I love this kid and I love the way she thinks.

You Asked, We Answered part 3

We were so overwhelmed (and excited) with all of the wonderful questions you all asked when we opened up the floor a few weeks ago, in celebration of 400 Posts and STILL Talking!! . We have loved answering these questions over dinner and the conversation that some of them have sparked has been so much fun. Thanks for that. I am back on track and I am trying to post a few people's questions once a week. Part 1 is HERE. Part 2 is HERE.

Jen asked:

Mamarazzi- How much time do you spend "playing" on the computer each day?
“Playing? Hmmm. Blogging is my FREE therapy and connection to a lot of people that I love. So I check in with my peeps throughout the day”
Big Daddy-Do you, or have you ever thought to, blog?
“popular question, I maintain a private blog, I update it once or twice a week for family and far away friends ”
Jordan- Do you and your friends think your mom is as cool as we do?
"Yes she knows good fashion and throws really good parties. My friends like to come to our house all the time because we know how to party here. Did you see what we did for my 13th Birthday?”

Jamie asked:

Mama - What was your motivation to start a blog?
“It started out as a way to journal about the adventures that my little family went on. Then it became all about Jordan and documenting her life so she could have something to refer to as she grows up. THEN it turned into a place where I connected with amazing women who were living parallel lives. Now I think it is a mixture of all three and I feel like after 3 years of blogging I have found my bloggy voice.”
Big Daddy - Broccoli or Cauliflower?
“Broccoli, I don’t like the texture of cauliflower”
Jordan - hypothetically speaking -You get your pet chinchilla...What is his or her name?
“If it’s a girl, Princess and if it is a boy Hercules II. Hercules is a really great name for such a small animal. It makes me laugh.”

Andrea asked:

MAMARAZZI: What is the best gift that Big Daddy has ever given you?
“The gift of Motherhood. My life is forever changed and blessed because of it.”
JORDAN: What is your favorite game that you play with your family after dinner?
“I like UNO Attacks cuz I can kick butt in that game.”
BIG DADDY: What was the moment that you knew you were in love with Mamarazzi?
“When she broke up with me after we had been dating for a while. It’s a long story but I was a wreck and I knew I needed her in my life so I stuck close by, played the friend card while she dated around, and eventually she figured it all out and asked me to marry her.”

{leah} asked:

Mamarazzi: What is one thing you did in your youth that your parents still don't know about?
(Mom, is that you?) My parents read this blog honey…I am not falling for that one! ;)
Big Daddy: Was your first kiss with Mamarazzi planned?
“No, I am really shy. I am sure Mamarazzi was thinking it was never going to happen.”
Jordan: If you could have one uncommon pet {not dog cat ect.} what would it be? “Definitely a chinchilla. I have brought home my science class’s chinchilla, Hercules, a few times and I really want one of my own someday.”
OK stay tuned more answers to your questions next week! In the meantime if you have a minute here is a GREAT article I am dying to share with y'all, it's short but you are gonna love the message. Check it out.

The Time THIS Mama Slept In...

Friday night Jordan and I made a cake. It was kind of late at night when we started the whole process and she went to bed before it had cooled enough for us to frost it. She made me promise to frost it before I went to bed so she could have a slice for breakfast (what? it is STRAWBERRY cake AND it has EGGS in it...and it is Saturday, a day we usually allow sugar cereal...we spend the rest of the weekend filling her with veggies and stuff...dude, don't judge me!). So I did just that, I frosted the cake and went to bed. I was actually sleeping well for a change so I kept on sleeping...it was nice.

When I got up THIS is what found... I laughed out loud when I saw it.

She was laying on the couch and a BIG smile spread across her face as she suppressed her giggles and said, "I couldn't stop myself it was just soooooo good!! Strawberry is my favorite fruit and the frosting has those little candies and it was just so good, I couldn't help it!!!!" I am pretty sure she gets her lack of self control from me....here's hoping she gets some of my better qualities as well.

You Asked, We Answered part 2

We were so overwhelmed (and excited) with all of the wonderful questions you all asked when we opened up the floor last week, in celebration of 400 Posts and STILL Talking!! . We have loved answering these questions over dinner and the conversation that some of them have sparked has been so much fun. Thanks for that. I had big plans to break these up into weekly segments, but life got in the way and here it is almost a month later and I am just now posting part 2. Part 1 is HERE.

Mary Ellen asked:

Mamarazzi - If you only had enough electricity to run 3 items in your house, which ones would you choose?
"My stove and refrigerator so I can care for my family and my hairdryer so I can look cute doing it."
Jordan - Would you rather work at a circus or a zoo?
"Definitely a zoo. Zoos seem to take better care of their animals and work hard to make a safe habitat for them"
Big Daddy - What is it like living with two such beautiful, talented ladies?
"Exhausting! They are so smart and witty you need to be on your toes all the time. I am most def outnumbered. I never had a chance. I also feel blessed to be around them everyday."

April asked:

Mamarazzi - What percent of actual WORK do you do on a daily basis (vs. blogging.)?
"Well blogging is kind of like my office water cooler. Since I work from home it is def a connection to the world out there. I only blog a few times a week, but if I am hosting a Swap or Giveaway I am pretty on top of that (you have to VERY organized) so that adds to my bloggy hours. BUT I honestly think I keep a pretty good balance. So...work 80% vs blogging 20%."
Jordan - Are you going to ever start your own blog?
"Probably someday when I have kids and stuff to blog about. Right now I do stuff on our family blog like Cooking with Jordan and on Saturdays I post my favorite videos sometimes."
Big Daddy - What do you love best about Mamarazzi?
"That she picked me. She is so beautiful and truly had her pick of guys and she picked me!"

Queenie Jeannie asked:

Mamarazzi - What is something you would really like to do or try, but are intimidated to try?
"I thought a lot about this and I can't think of anything I am too intimidated to try. There are a lot of things I would like to do, but nothing that fear or insecurity is keeping me from doing"
Jordan - What do you plan on studying in college?
"Regular college classes first and then nurse school. I want to be a baby nurse and help new moms learn how to take care of their newborns."
Big Daddy - What changes have you made in your life since you were in the hospital?
"I am really paying attention to making healthy food choices and getting more exercise. I want to do everything I can to make sure that I am always here for my family. I lost my dad when I was young, I know it is my job to stay healthy so I don't have to put my family through that kind of loss."

Carrie asked:

Mamarazzi- Why Diet Pepsi?...you know Diet Coke tastes better!
"BLASPHEMY!! This blog is powered by Diet Pepsi...OK not the blog but the blog author!"
Big Daddy- Ever comment on Mamarazzi's blog?...my husband doesn't on mine and it bugs me!
"Yes, I have been known to leave a comment now and then. I do read every new post but don't always comment, does that make me a 'blurker'?"
Jordan- Caught any frogs lately?
"All of the frogs have been hibernating but it is Spring now so I am sure I will start hunting for them again soon. I am sure they miss me." (new readers, we have a family of frogs living in our backyard and they love Jordan. Every Spring she goes to greet them and "hunts" them though out the Spring and Summer months. She is the frog whisperer...this is why there is a frog poking out of her sparkly purse on our header to see video of J catching frogs in 2007 go HERE.)
Thank you everyone for your thoughtful questions. I will TRY and post more answers next week.

"Family Time is Happy Time"

Jordan was recently assigned to write a true life narrative essay for her Language Arts class. I LOVE the topic she chose to write about; Family Time is Happy Time. Friends, she wrote about our nightly tradition of playing games after dinner. I know I talk about this on our blog all. the. time. BUT I can't tell you enough how much I love doing this with my family.

THIS is the reason why it means so much to me: my kid loves it.

Yep. That's it.

It is a simple thing that we do as a family that makes my kid feel valued and loved.

She knows that this time we spend together as a family is precious.

She knows that we value this time with her.

She knows we look forward to it.

She knows that nothing else matters to us in that moment that we are together as a family.

She KNOWS all of this.

It was super fun to read her observations, thoughts and feelings about game time.

And...it made me cry. Grateful happy tears of course.

I love this girl so much.

I can't give her a lot of things her heart desires, but I CAN give her myself and the gift of my time.

It seems that is good enough for her, and thats cool.

I scanned her final copy below (errors and all). You can click on it to make it bigger.
(clickety to biggefy)

Bloggy friends...spend time PLAYING with your kids, it matters to them.

Charades with a Twist

Jordan is 13 and is an amazing kid (you already know this, but I love saying it, cuz ummm it's true). The communication we share is pretty great, especially for a teenager and we are grateful. We have always wanted to make sure she is in tune with her *emotional awareness and have always told her that sharing her feelings is important to us (even when she thinks what she is feeling might hurt our feelings). We want to know how she feels and what she thinks about life in general. She is forming real opinions about the world around her and the people in her life. But she hasn't always picked up on social cues and we have had to help her as she makes new friends and do what we can to help her foster those relationships.

Tonight we played a really fun game that I found on the Fishful Thinking website. We played Emotion Charades (go ahead, check it out) it was REALLY interesting to watch Jordan "act out" different emotions and to have her "guess" as Big Daddy and I acted out the emotions. She loved it...I mean LOVED it. We laughed until our faces hurt. It really was so. much. fun.

We filled the bowl with emotions worried
surprised

scared
angry
excited
curious (kitten...so cute)
look at this face, she was having a great time!!
We ended up filling the bowl a few more times and played well into the evening. Try it with your family, let me know how it goes! And seriously check out the site, you are going to L-O-V-E it!
My favorite moment of the evening came from Jordan who was acting out the word "fancy" (one of the awesome words she contributed). We shouted out several guesses and when I said, "beautiful" she said, "No, BUT still true". We rolled laughing, but I also had that little moment when I thought...OK good the kid knows she is beautiful, awesome.

The Fishful Thinking site is filled with awesome information and tools for parents. Fishful Thinking's concepts about Emotional Awareness, Hope, Self Efficacy, Resilience, Optimism and more can be put into action with every type of kid.

OH and check out this Quiz and see how resilient your child is. Super cool!!

*Emotional awareness is the ability to identify and describe what you are feeling and to know what others are feeling.

Black Eye...OH My!

Jordan fainted in Gym class on Monday. She is sporting a sweet shiner now after her face broke her fall on the blacktop. She hat a nice fat lip too but the swelling went down from that pretty quickly. We decided that since it was a head injury and that we didn't actually witness what happened (not that it would have mattered a whole lot but we would have an actual account of the events leading up to it) that we would take her to see the her Doctor. Jordan is just getting over a pretty nasty cold and has a lingering cough. From what the Doctor was able to assess based on Jordan's account and the story we got from her gym teacher, is that she may have just been a little dehydrated and out of breath. That coupled with some 'girly' issues made her faint.

Her Doctor recommended adding some iron to her regular vitamin intake and she now knows when she starts to feel that way again that she needs to sit down.

Basically I think it scared us all more than anything else. It took a few hours for Jordan to get her coloring back and her eyes were totally dilated when Big Daddy went and picked her up at school. Poor kid...

The best quotes about this:

"My black eye kinda makes me look tough, like 'don't mess with me', kinda, huh?"

"A kid fainting in gym class is something that goes down in history, kids will be talking about this for a long time"

At least she has a good attitude about it!

tough girl
"you want a piece of me?"
"juuuust kidding"
J decided a "dressier outfit" for the day might "distract people" from the shiner. Do you love the boots we got on clearance for $3?!?! Cute right?! I love how this girl goes from wearing all black some weeks to pink and girly the next. It's been fun watching her decide on her own style as she gets older AND I love that she likes rocking the side pony. OH and I had the nurse measure her because she seems to be growing at light speed. She is 5'3" now. I can hardly believe it.
So that's how our week started...how are y'all?

I Feel High

It could be the jet lag talking, but I feel high. I have been walking around with a huge smile on my face for days now. OH how I loved the Fishful Thinking symposium on Possibilities for Parenting in NY. I feel refreshed and uplifted by the message presented by Dr. Karen Reivich. I want y'all to get an idea of the awesomeness that is this woman. Go to fishfulthinking.com and watch her Optimism Workshop. I PROMISE you, you will be so glad that you did. Let me know what you think...

I am also super impressed with the other women I met this weekend. I have to tell you, the people they picked for the 10 women faculty are fabulous (yea, I know I am including myself in that count, I feel fabulous, so why not...right?) Seriously meeting everyone was awesome. I already felt connected to Tiffany from The Secret is in the Sauce and Cecily from My Chaos My Bliss through blogging, personal email, phone calls and texting. And I gotta tell you those two girls are F-U-N, but there was an instant connection with all the other women too. I didn't want the weekend to end, it was just click, click, click...everything clicked. AND the people from Mr. Youth; Kelly, Kristin and Laura...awesome. I cannot say enough about the beautiful accommodations, the way they took care of us and the organization and time that went into putting together this truly incredible event. OH and the Pepperidge Farm executives totally great too, I had a blast meeting everyone and I can't wait to get to work spreading the word about this fantastic initiative. I have a few fun contests lined up all centered around Fishful Thinking so keep an eye out for those!

I was not my typical Mamarazzi self this weekend and have very few pictures to share. I was WAY too busy soaking up all of the Fishful Thinking Goodness. I really didn't leave the comfy accommodations of the beautiful hotel except for dinner on Saturday night. The few pictures I actually did take are messed up, I think my camera is broken.

In other news. I had planned on spending today in bed (I was soooo tired after the fun weekend and the many miles of travel) but got a phone call at 10am from J's school. She fainted during gym class and fell hard smacking her pretty face on the blacktop. We decided to take her to the Doctor, just to be safe. We still are not sure exactly what happened, but her blood pressure was low and so were her oxygen levels. Her Doctor is chalking it all up to her still getting over a cold and having a heavy cycle. So she has a pretty good shiner and is taking it easy, but it was a scary moment for her and an eventful afternoon for us.

So yep...back into the mama swing of things. How are y'all?
