Introducing Hermie

This weekend we went to a street fair and as Jordan was standing in line for the big slide we saw some people with a little cage and a Hermit Crab. Big Daddy gave J a choice; $5 to go on the big slide 3 times or $5 to go towards a Hermit Crab. The decision was simple...

Introducing Hermie
J spent her $25 Easter gift card from her Grandparents
on a kit to make her cage cooler
fixing up the cage
Hermie crawling around to creep me out
Hermie crawling on J's hand "ohh that tickles!!"
J and Hermie
a close up of Hermie!
this kid is tickled pink...I am a little grossed out but glad she is happy
the new primped out cage

From what we have read about Hermit Crabs we learned they are social animals, so we have plans for a bigger cage and a "sibling" for Hermie soon...stay tuned!

i'm not much on pets either, but hermie is easy and well, j is old enough to take care of him, so that's all good!

and good decision making momma!!!

Watch out, those little suckers pinch! I had many hermit crabs when I was growing up, and they were generally good, easy to care for pets. Once we had one get out of the cage, and disappear. Three *months* later, it came out from under the washing machine, no worse for the wear. Back into the cage it went, and lived happily ever after.

Jordan is so cute & definitely in love with Hermie!

I love this. Maybe when we get back from our Nana's and Papa's house. This will be fun.

I'm with you on the whole pet thing. We had a cat that found a new home and a dog that found a new home and I can't tell you how happy I was the day our hamster died. I have to say the crab... really creepy.

The idea of the little creature, lost somewhere in my house, creeps me out big time, but I'm glad she's happy!

My kids never bothered to ask for rodents or reptiles for pets. They prefer a calm, sane mother to a hysterical, crazed one!

I feel the SAME way about our lizard...happy they are happy, but a little grossed out. I let the kids have him (Jon included) ONLY when they all agreed I wouldn't ever have to take care of him. And so far (2 years), I haven't. Wooo!

yeah..we can only do cats here...they are pretty self sufficient!

You can find Hermie some friends at our beach....the weekend before last Quentyn and a friend found 30 hermit crabs and put them all in one bucket....then let them all go back to their families before we left the beach! I'm a little creeped out by most things like that....but having two boys...you have to tolerate it! =) Wonder if I could mail you one! Think it would pass the post-offices' question of, "Is there anything liquid, fragile or perishable inside?" LOL!=)

oH we are SO skipping the stinky fish tank stage and going right for the hermit crab when "pet time" comes upon us...which I have a feeling will be pretty soon.

Hehe...so do they mate in captivity? otherwise you'd better make sure that sibling is a brother...or you'll have some es'plainin' to do to J when brother and sister hook up to produce Baby Hermie.

I love how great she is with animals. The hermit crab is WAY cooler than the chinchilla. Good call!

We aren't a pet family either because I am alergic to basically anything with fur. Hermie is creepy but he doesn't have fur! Good call:-)

Our Hermit Crabs name is Hermie to, lol. We got him or her at the beach and it's been almost a yr. and Hermie is still alive. We also have a cat Shawn, he is the most lovable cat alive, he would you lick you to death if we would let him.

I'm with you - those things creep me out! Give me a dog any day, but little crawly things just don't belong in my house!
She looks so excited so I guess that is what counts! Welcome Hermie!

That second video cracked me up! Love it! Well, they're both great!
How fun. I wanted one of those when I was J's age. That makes me want one now! Hahaha! You're never too old for a hermit crab, right?

Christina said...

Awe.... How cute.. For J of course!

I don't think I would want it crawling on my hand either!

As a kid I loved hermit crabs, now they creep me out a little! Hope she enjoys it. If she read this tell her to stop now...mine never lasted through a shell change. Make sure you have lots of options available to it!

I love it! Never in a million years would I have thought of a hermit crab as a pet! I love how happy your daughter is with hers - it'd freak me out a little... ;)

Wishing you a Very Happy Mother's Day! :)

I'm pretty sure the ONLY kind of cat we had growing up were feral cats. I pretty much thought all cats were psycho until I became an adult. lol

I think Hermmie is kinda cute!

I've always thought I might want a hermit crab, but I dunno. Like the pimped out cage :)

Nicki said...

Cool hermit crab! I'm scared of them. Monkeyboy used to have pet hermit crabs all the time, but I always refused to touch them... those huge claws FREAK me out!

Tracy said...

Love it. Perfect Pet! We have them. They don't shed, bark, stay up all night, eat alot or poop alot. One thing to remember, they molt like snakes. They loose their skin and stay in their shell for loong time after. if you don't know this you might think it's dead and have the dreaded funeral. We didn't know for the longest time. I know Jordan will be a great Hermie Mommy!

I'm glad that Jordan likes it...but it's creeping me out a little too! I couldn't even watch the second video....yuck!

Errr...I mean welcome Hermie!

Ha, welcome to the fam Herm!

Is there ever a picture where Jordan ISN'T smiling? She's always so happy I love it!

Hermie is totally cute. Who would have known that Hermit Crabs are "social animals". If you do get a sibling you could name it Hermione, lol.

Joann said...

CREEEEEEEPY!!! But I'm glad that Jordan is happy!!! = )

This seems like a pet that my family can handle! I love hermit crabs, I think they're cute (is that weird?)

We have 5 of the sweetest kittens ever - holler if you want one and I'll meet ya in the middle.

I love Hermie's beach umbrella.

HOW FUN!!! Maybe that'll be a pet I can get my kiddos. We'll see if I'm as nice as you! :)

We had a couple hermit crabs for a few months(one was also named Hermie).

They didn't last very long in our house, not sure why. Though I'm pretty sure the first one died because the other one "stole" his shell. We found him without his shell one day and the other one was in it. He never did claim another and ended up dying. So make sure you have plenty of extra shells in there of all sizes so they can move when they get too big for the one they are in.

Queenie Jeannie said...

Bella loved hers!! We had to get rid of it when we moved, but it was really cool until then!

heehee Too cute!

Hi! I appreciate your comment on my blog. It amazes me when people have a kajillion followers and comments and still have time to be personable :)

I have never had a hermit crab. I had a fish tank with a snail when I lived in the dorms at college. But the snail, unbeknownst to me, died in its shell and I thought it just liked that one spot of the tank until it started stinking to high heaven. I'm sure Hermie will do much better though!
