Last weekend we attended a Native American Pow Wow. It was awesome. We had a great time walking around and looking at the different tents where local artists were selling beautifully beaded jewelry, authentic Native American clothing and even some super groovy Indian "artifacts" (
side note...J likes to point out "artifacts" anytime we are on a hike or out and about in nature..."artifacts" can be anything from a cool rock or shell to something that looks like a fossil, she is cool like that). There was super yummy food, we had Indian fry bread tacos....sooo good! There were many performers and dances and it was very entertaining and moving to watch these people celebrate their culture so beautifully. The traditional ceremonial clothing was fantastic, so many details and creativity. It was a great way to spend a sunny afternoon...good times.
Big Daddy and Jordan watching the dancers
we found a shady spot to enjoy our yummy lunch

Fun stuff right? Big daddy is always finding cool community events for us to go and check out, I love that about him.

Looks like a fun time! I grew up going to Pow Wows. They're great! And those Indian Tacos...mmm... I always loved getting in on the friendship dances!
I think it's great that you find these things for the family to enjoy. Sunny weather, your loved ones around you, and some super cool Native American stuff? What could be more fun than that?
We have witnessed some of these before, they are always so cool to see. :)
We're done something like that before and it was so much fun AND educational, too!
I have actually been to a few of these, and they were fun!
I have heard those pow wows are pretty cool, but have never been to one. Glad you all had fun.
Your post and photos are wonderful. I love going to Pow Wows, I'm always bummed if I miss one.
Looks like a lot of fun!
Going to this type of event is why I miss not living in New Mexico anymore. :- ( The food is always so good- love the fry bread. And a good introduction to another culture. Thanks for sharing. Sue
Yum Indian fry bread tacos are the best!
Fun!
My dad did Native American dancing on his mission in Scotland. I can't really picture it, but yeah. You want to see some real Native Americans? You just come on down to my town.
my 3 year old was playing/making wishes with a dandilion that had gone to seed this morning...a HUGE one...holding each of the seeds that had stuck to his shirt....& I thought of your Blog! =)
Wow, how fun! I've never been to one of those, but I've wanted to for a long time. I think it'd be a neat experience!
On a side note, I LOVE that Jordan is always dressed so modestly! She may be young, but you'd be surprised how many kids her age are already dressing poorly! But Jordan is always dressed appropriately--she's a young woman worth respecting!
They have these Pow-Wow's in our area also. They are awesome! Our kids love them.
we have a pow wow in our town every year but it is not a native american event but i love going
we do have dancers and many other things that go on at that time
isnt it fun to get out and enjoy the warmth and sunshine with your family
Thats really neat. We have something like that here every May. Its always nice to find community events.
That looks like a blast! I love that J likes looking for "artifacts"! She's captured my heart once again! Ya, the archaeologist in me is coming out :)
how fun...I love events like that also!!
Looks like a good time was had by all!
I have given you an award, come on over an grab it!
That is a lot of fun!
We live in Oklahoma and have lots of opportunities to see Native American 'Pow Wows', dress, and artifacts. It's always really interesting and fun to watch. Their dress is always beautiful.
Looks like you guys had a great time!
Oh, I love pow wow! As a proud member of the Anishinaabe nation, I love to remind people that we created the first dreamcatchers, and the jingle dress/jingle dance originated with our nation as a healing dance for a sick child. I'm glad you had a great time at the Pow wow! When one is held in an Indian community, there's big party afterwards called a 49. One of my favorite jokes is: How can you tell if it was a good 49? Answer: when you wake up in the morning, there are 50 strangers in your kitchen cooking your bacon and eggs and calling you "cousin." :D K
That is very interesting about the origins of the dance. As we were getting to the Pow Wow J was asking why they danced. I did the best I could. I told her they danced for good weather, for healing or to give thanks. Jordan loved it. It was really cool to see everyone so proud of their culture.
Thats so cool! I used to go to Pow-Wows when I was a little kid, and I always have wanted to take Monkeyboy, Little Bear and Pufferfish... but there don't seem to be many Pow-Wows in Chicago! (The ones I used to go to were in Wisconsin and Colorado.)
How exciting. Looks like a lot of fun.
Have a fabUlous weekend.
awww... that DOES look like a lot of fun!
REAL fun stuff... I would love to see a pow-wow someday. Sounds like you guys had a superrific time! :)
