Charades with a Twist

Jordan is 13 and is an amazing kid (you already know this, but I love saying it, cuz ummm it's true). The communication we share is pretty great, especially for a teenager and we are grateful. We have always wanted to make sure she is in tune with her *emotional awareness and have always told her that sharing her feelings is important to us (even when she thinks what she is feeling might hurt our feelings). We want to know how she feels and what she thinks about life in general. She is forming real opinions about the world around her and the people in her life. But she hasn't always picked up on social cues and we have had to help her as she makes new friends and do what we can to help her foster those relationships.

Tonight we played a really fun game that I found on the Fishful Thinking website. We played Emotion Charades (go ahead, check it out) it was REALLY interesting to watch Jordan "act out" different emotions and to have her "guess" as Big Daddy and I acted out the emotions. She loved it...I mean LOVED it. We laughed until our faces hurt. It really was so. much. fun.

We filled the bowl with emotions worried
surprised

scared
angry
excited
curious (kitten...so cute)
look at this face, she was having a great time!!
We ended up filling the bowl a few more times and played well into the evening. Try it with your family, let me know how it goes! And seriously check out the site, you are going to L-O-V-E it!
My favorite moment of the evening came from Jordan who was acting out the word "fancy" (one of the awesome words she contributed). We shouted out several guesses and when I said, "beautiful" she said, "No, BUT still true". We rolled laughing, but I also had that little moment when I thought...OK good the kid knows she is beautiful, awesome.

The Fishful Thinking site is filled with awesome information and tools for parents. Fishful Thinking's concepts about Emotional Awareness, Hope, Self Efficacy, Resilience, Optimism and more can be put into action with every type of kid.

OH and check out this Quiz and see how resilient your child is. Super cool!!

*Emotional awareness is the ability to identify and describe what you are feeling and to know what others are feeling.

Abby would love that game! Brittany, on the other hand, is far too cool for that...she is 17, you know? LOL! You and Jordan share the same kind of closeness that I share with my own girls. They can talk to me about ANYTHING...we're very open with one another and I am so thankful!

My kids LOVE that game - even as young as they are! I have never thought of "curious kitten" though - what else did you put in the bowl?

How fun! We have been working on learning about emotions and how to appropriately express them with our son...this would be a great game to play with him. Thanks for the tip!

Awesome family activity! So often we assume that kids are aware of emotions and wonder why they aren't picking up on our cues and the social cues of their friends. Making them aware and teaching about emotions can really be helpful!

Okay, so I am totally hooked on the fish...(HA! I just made a punny!) I clicked on your little guy again this morning and found our FHE activity for tonight...we are going to do the gratitude poster and I am SO excited to post pics about it on my blog. I hope it gets more activity to this awesome site because my theory is that the more families who are doing it the better off all the kids in the world would be which means less drama for me to have to deal with later on!
