Photo Story Friday #20

Every Christmas we put up 2 trees. One tree is a little one that holds our growing collection of traditional and homemade ornaments. The little tree is in our family room in the back of the house where we spend most of our time. The other is bigger and sits in the formal living room, its a little "fancier" and looks gorgeous from the street in the big front window. It is also beautiful on the inside and I have really been enjoying it as our light in the morning as we gather for family scripture study and prayer each day before we go our separate ways for the day. I will post pictures of that tree later.

This is really the first year that Jordan did all the decorating of the little tree. She couldn't believe I let her do the whole thing. Yea, I can get a little anal when it comes to decor, I have a crazy sense of order that can take the fun out of things for other people (even though the organizing part is pure bliss for me). This year is just let it go...I was so proud of myself and I REALLY resisted fixing all of the ornaments once Jordan went to bed (to be honest I moved a few, just because they were backwards). For the first few days the tree in all its disorganized, unbalanced charm disturbed my sense of order but after a while it really began to make me smile. Remembering the smile on my little girl's face as she took total control of decorating something important to our family makes me realize THAT is what life is all about. Letting go...relaxing and living in the moment. I hope we all do that this Holiday Season...I know I am planning on making a REAL effort to just let things go in the coming year and just living in the moment, soaking up the awesomeness that is my child and finding the beauty in the little things that are perfectly imperfect.

smiling already

one little tree, one strand of lights, one happy girl
snowmen, so cute!
giving the snowman bunny ears...goofy kid!
the star and angel...small tree on overload
yep...life is pretty darn good! Merry christmas everyone!

I love the fact that you have a "little tree" for the family ornaments. It just makes the tree more "special"

Our tree is all family ornaments - each year we all get ornaments that depict something that happened that year. The year each child was born, the first honor roll, Sports achievements (winner season, winning goals), year of driving, each milestone in their lives and ours.

We only have one tree in our house - but it is covered with special ornaments that help to "relive" different years. But then again - we've been at this for over 30 years now - LOADS of memories.

It's hard to let go isn't it. But that's what makes things special. In her own way she made that tree special for all of you!

I try to tell myself that the kid tree is to showcase the homemade ornaments but, let's face it.... a tiny bit of it is to give them something to do while I decorate the "nice" tree. Thanks for bringing things into perspective. Your words are too true!

BTW--You are a fun mom. I can't imagine you ever having a county fair mom moment!! (Thanks for the comment.)

I too have a hard time not being in control of things- even things like the tree. Good for you! Jordan did a great job!

Looks great! Lyndsy has a little tree this year, she puts an ornament on each day. She was putting them all together at the bottom until the tree fell over the other day. J's gotta be better at it than that!

She did great! And so did you! :D
I used to be the same way with my kids... I still remember one Halloween when they wanted to help with the fake spiderwebs SO bad - I let them "help" and there was little balls of cotton stuck everywhere.. I went back to fix them and couldn't bring myself to do it because I couldn't get their smiling faces and sense of pure joy out of my head. My holiday decorating has changed quite a bit since then. It may not look that great to others, but I love it.
Love the gold stockings, btw!

Tiff's comment was funny. I feel like I'm at the county fair every day....And I'm the official butt-wiper of all the grouchy animals. Luckily, the papa bear wipes his own butt, or I'd be forced to retire early.

Jordan did a nice job on the ornaments.
I remember being super excited to be old enough to help with the "pretty tree"...and then wishing I was still to young to help the following year...and pretty much every year after that.

Ah yes. With our crazy December activities, I let/made the kids do the tree this year (once I made the branches pretty - can't give up ALL control yet.) It was beautiful to hear Sadie guiding/bossing the others, "Those are too close together, you can't have two alike too close, mix up the colors, the balls can go on the inner branches to make it fuller..." Just like I would have! LOL!

J did a great job! Can't wait to see your Living Room tree!

I was just looking at our tree today thinking how not-perfect it was. I started wishing that I hadn't just let the girls do what they wanted with it.

But then I told myself that there will be many more years of 'the perfect tree' than these few precious years of imperfection.

I'm glad you let Jordan do it her way. :)

ps: I found you on FB -- but for some reason, beside your picture, it doesn't give me any options to add you as my friend or even to send you a message...????

We always had two trees growing up (actually, a whole lot more than 2, but 2 big ones), one that was "fancy" and matched our living room and the other downstairs that had all the memories on it. Though it was uglier and scrawnier, it's my favorite.
